How To Choose The Right Hair Products For Your Hair Type

Hair Products Routine

Choosing hair products should make your routine easier, but for many people, it feels more confusing than ever.

Between social media trends, influencer recommendations, viral products and “must-have” routines, it can be difficult to know what your hair actually needs. In the salon, we often see clients bring in products they bought because someone online recommended them, only to find their hair feels heavy, dry, greasy, flat or harder to manage.

A good product is not always the right product for your hair.

At Stonehills Hair, we do not believe in one-size-fits-all haircare. The right products depend on your hair type, scalp, colour history, condition, styling habits and the finish you want. A routine should support your hair as it is now, not just follow what happens to be trending.

Why One Hair Product Does Not Suit Everyone

Hair products work differently depending on the person using them. Fine hair, thick hair, curly hair, coloured hair, dry hair and oily scalps all need different support.

A rich mask that works beautifully on thick, coarse hair may leave fine hair feeling flat. A lightweight volumising shampoo may suit finer hair well, but may not give enough moisture to dry or brittle ends. A styling cream that smooths frizz on one person may make another person’s hair feel coated or greasy.

This is why we always look at what your hair is actually doing. Are the ends dry? Is the scalp getting oily quickly? Is the colour fading? Does the hair feel weak, frizzy, heavy or difficult to style?

The best product is not always the most popular one. It is the one that suits your hair and scalp.

Start With Your Hair Type, Not The Trend

Before choosing shampoo, conditioner, masks or styling products, start with your hair type and condition.

Fine Hair

We usually recommend lightweight shampoos, conditioning mainly through the mid-lengths and ends, and volumising or texturising products for finer hair. Heavy oils, thick masks and rich conditioners near the roots can make fine hair look flatter, even when the product itself is high quality.

Fine hair can still be dry, damaged or colour-treated, so the answer is not to avoid care altogether. It is about choosing lighter formulas and using them in the right place.

Thick Or Coarse Hair

Thick or coarse hair often needs more moisture, smoothing and control. Richer conditioners, masks, creams and oils can work well, especially through the mid-lengths and ends.

In the salon, we often recommend sectioning thicker hair when applying products so the formula reaches the areas that need it most. Applying a small amount only to the surface may not give enough support, while applying too much at the roots can still make the scalp feel heavy.

Curly Or Wavy Hair

Curly and wavy hair usually needs moisture, definition and frizz control. Curl creams, leave-in conditioners and gentler drying routines can help curls sit more naturally and make styling feel more predictable.

The amount of product matters. Too little may not give enough definition, while too much can make curls feel sticky or weighed down. We usually look at curl pattern, texture, density and how the client likes to wear their hair before recommending a routine.

Colour-Treated Hair

Colour-treated hair needs products that help protect tone, shine and condition. Harsh shampoos, over-washing and lack of conditioning can leave colour looking dull or faded more quickly.

If your hair is coloured, lightened or highlighted, your routine may need colour-safe shampoo, nourishing conditioner, heat protection and occasional treatments. The aim is to keep the hair looking fresh between appointments while supporting strength and shine.

Dry, Damaged Or Brittle Hair

Dry hair and damaged hair are not always the same thing. Dry hair usually needs moisture, while damaged hair may need repair, strengthening and protection from further stress.

If your hair feels brittle, snaps easily or has been affected by heat styling, colouring or lightening, a treatment or mask may help. Using too many heavy products at once can leave the hair feeling coated rather than healthier, so a balanced routine usually works better than adding everything at once.

Hair care Routine

Do Not Forget Your Scalp

In the salon, we often ask clients how their scalp feels, not just how their hair looks. That usually tells us a lot about why a product is or is not working.

Shampoo is often chosen around the scalp and roots, while conditioner and treatments are usually chosen around the mid-lengths and ends. For example, you may have an oily scalp but dry ends. In that case, applying a very rich product everywhere may make the roots greasy while still not fully solving the dryness at the ends.

A dry, itchy or flaky scalp may need a gentler scalp care routine. An oily scalp may need better cleansing and lighter products. Product build-up can also make the hair feel dull, heavy or difficult to style.

If your scalp feels uncomfortable, it is worth looking at your scalp care routine before buying more styling products. Healthy-looking hair starts with a scalp that feels clean, balanced and comfortable.

Common Product Mistakes We See In The Salon

One of the most common mistakes we see is buying products based only on influencer recommendations. Someone else’s hair may look beautiful with a product, but that does not mean it will suit your texture, density, scalp or styling routine.

Another common issue is using too much product. If your hair feels greasy, sticky, heavy or dull, it may not need a stronger product. It may need less product, a lighter formula or a better cleanse.

We also see clients applying conditioner too close to the roots when their scalp is already oily, using rich masks on very fine hair, clarifying too often, or expecting one product to fix every issue.

A product should make your hair easier to manage. If your hair feels flatter, rougher, greasier, drier or harder to style after using something new, that is useful information. It may simply not be the right fit.

How Stonehills Helps Clients Choose Hair Products

At Stonehills Hair, we approach product choice in the same way we approach hair in the salon: personally.

We look at your hair type, scalp, condition, colour, styling habits and goals before recommending products. A client with fine, colour-treated hair may need a very different routine from someone with thick, dry hair. Someone who heat styles every day may need different support from someone who air dries and wants natural texture.

We also think about what you will realistically use. A routine with ten steps is not helpful if you only have time for three. The right products should fit into your life, not make haircare feel like another job.

Our aim is to recommend products based on individual hair and scalp needs, not push a generic routine. Sometimes that means changing your shampoo. Sometimes it means using conditioner differently. Sometimes it means adding one treatment, one styling product or one scalp product that makes everything else work better.

A Simple Hair Product Routine

You do not need every product on the shelf. Most people need the right few products used consistently.

Start with shampoo. We usually choose this around the scalp, roots and overall hair condition. Then choose conditioner based on the mid-lengths and ends. Fine hair may need lightweight conditioning, while thick or dry hair may need something richer.

Next, consider a treatment or mask if your hair needs extra support. This might be for moisture, repair, colour care, strength or softness.

Then choose a styling product based on the finish you want. That might be volume, smoothing, curl definition, heat protection, hold, shine or texture.

Finally, think about any extra support your scalp or hair may need. This could be scalp care, a leave-in product, oil, serum or finishing spray.

The key is not to add more for the sake of it. The key is to choose products that each have a clear job.

When Should You Change Your Hair Products?

Your hair changes over time, so your products may need to change too.

You may need to review your routine after colouring or lightening your hair, during seasonal changes, after heat damage, during hormonal changes such as perimenopause or menopause, or if your scalp becomes itchy, oily or flaky.

It is also worth changing products if your hair no longer responds the way it used to. If your usual shampoo feels too heavy, your conditioner is no longer giving enough moisture, or your styling product is not holding the way it did before, your hair may be asking for something different.

In the salon, we often remind clients that this is normal. Your hair has not “gone wrong”. It may simply need a routine that suits where it is now.
