Hair Scrub

A hair scrub can help refresh the scalp, lift product build-up and leave your roots feeling cleaner between washes. In the salon, we often see clients using dry shampoo, styling products or richer haircare and then wondering why their hair still feels heavy after washing. Often, the scalp just needs a little extra support.

The right scalp scrub depends on what your scalp is doing. Some need a purifying scrub to help with excess oil and product buildup, while others need something gentler for a dry, flaky, itchy or sensitive scalp. Products such as KÉRASTASE Scrub Energisant and Moroccanoil Scalp Purifying Scrub can be useful when the scalp needs a deeper refresh. Not sure which scrub suits your scalp or routine? What Does a Hair Scrub Help With?

A hair scrub or scalp scrub helps exfoliate the scalp, remove dead skin cells, lift loose flakes and clear product build-up from the scalp surface. It can be especially useful if your roots feel oily, heavy, dull or not properly clean after shampooing. In the salon, we usually look at what is causing the hair to feel flat or coated. If a client uses dry shampoo, styling products, oils or richer masks regularly, a purifying scalp scrub may help remove buildup and leave the scalp feeling fresher. If the scalp feels flaky or congested, gentle scalp exfoliation can also help loosen dead skin and support a cleaner scalp environment.

Some scalp scrubs use physical exfoliants such as sea salt or jojoba esters, while others include ingredients such as salicylic acid, glycolic acid or lactic acid to help dissolve dead skin cells. Many formulas also include soothing or nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, coconut oil, natural oils or vitamin E.

If your hair feels heavy even after washing, a scalp scrub may be worth adding into your routine.

Choosing the Right Scrub for Your Scalp

A good product is not always the right product for your scalp. We usually recommend choosing a hair scrub based on your scalp type, how often you wash your hair and how much product you use.

For oilier roots or a scalp that feels congested, something like KÉRASTASE Scrub Energisant may be a good option to consider as part of a scalp-refresh routine. It is the kind of product we would look at when the hair feels weighed down, oily or in need of a deeper cleanse.

For clients who use a lot of styling products or feel like shampoo alone is not removing build-up, Moroccanoil Scalp Purifying Scrub may be more suited to that purifying, reset-style cleanse. It works well as part of a routine where the scalp needs to feel cleaner before following with shampoo and conditioner.

If you have ongoing dandruff, redness, psoriasis, soreness or persistent scalp irritation, it is best to get professional advice before using stronger exfoliating scalp products.

Complete Your Scalp Care Routine

A hair scrub can be a useful step when your scalp feels oily, congested, flaky or heavy from product build-up. Used occasionally and chosen carefully, it can help the scalp feel cleaner and give your hair a fresher foundation before styling. For the best results, pair your scrub with the right supporting products. A clarifying shampoo can help cleanse properly after exfoliation, while a conditioner or moisturising hair mask can keep the mid-lengths and ends soft. Hair Scrub FAQs

Is a scalp scrub good for an itchy or flaky scalp?

A gentle scalp scrub may help lift loose flakes and refresh the scalp surface, but it depends on the cause of the itchiness. If your scalp is sore, red, very sensitive or you have ongoing dandruff or psoriasis, it is best to get professional advice before using exfoliating scalp products.

How often should you use a hair scrub?

Most people only need to use a hair scrub occasionally, especially if they use dry shampoo, oils or styling products regularly. Over-exfoliating can leave the scalp feeling dry or irritated, so we usually recommend starting slowly and seeing how your scalp responds.

What is the difference between a scalp scrub and clarifying shampoo?

A scalp scrub exfoliates the scalp to help remove dead skin cells, loose flakes and build-up from the roots. A clarifying shampoo gives the hair and scalp a deeper cleanse. Some routines may include both, but not always at the same time, especially if your scalp is sensitive.

Can a hair scrub help with oily hair?

Yes, a purifying hair scrub can help remove excess oil and product build-up from the scalp surface. If your roots feel oily quickly or your hair feels heavy after washing, a scalp scrub may help your shampoo work more effectively.
