Scalp Care Starts With Understanding Your Scalp

In the salon, we often see clients focusing on damaged hair, frizz or lack of shine without realising the issue may start at the scalp. A clean scalp helps support healthy hair, while dryness, excess oil, dead skin, environmental pollutants and product build-up can leave the roots feeling heavy, itchy or uncomfortable.

Scalp health can look different from person to person. Some clients are prone to oily hair and need formulas that help balance natural oils without making the scalp feel stripped. Others have a sensitive scalp that reacts easily to heavy products, overwashing or harsh formulas. We also see clients with dry skin, flakes, redness or scalp itchiness who need a gentler routine that supports comfort as well as cleanliness.

A good scalp care routine usually starts with choosing the right shampoo and conditioner for your scalp and hair type. If the scalp feels oily quickly, look for products designed to cleanse impurities and manage excess oil. If the scalp feels tight, flaky or irritated, hydration and gentle nourishment may be more important. If product build-up is the issue, a scalp treatment or exfoliation product may help refresh the roots and leave the scalp feeling cleaner.

The key is balance. Over-cleansing can strip natural oils, while not cleansing thoroughly enough can leave the scalp congested. That is why we prefer to guide clients based on what they have noticed: itchiness, flakes, oil, dryness, irritation, brittle hair, reduced shine or a difference in how the hair behaves after washing.

How To Build A Routine for a Healthy Scalp

Hair care for scalp concerns should be simple, consistent and matched to what your scalp is actually showing you. In the salon, we often see clients using several strong products at once because they want a quick fix for flakes, oil or itchiness. More product is not always better. A clearer routine usually gives the scalp a better chance to settle.

Start with cleansing. A suitable shampoo helps remove dirt, scalp oil, impurities and product build-up from the roots. Massage it gently into the head with your fingertips rather than scratching with your nails. This helps lift residue without causing unnecessary irritation. Rinse thoroughly, as leftover shampoo or conditioner can make the scalp feel itchy or heavy.

Next, condition. Conditioner is important for the hair lengths and ends, but many clients apply too much close to the roots, especially if they already have oily hair. Unless the product is designed for scalp and hair use, keep richer conditioners mainly through the mid-lengths and ends so the scalp stays fresh.

Scalp serums and scalp treatments can then be used to finish the routine. A scalp serum may help support hydration, comfort or balance, depending on the formula. Exfoliating scalp treatments can help lift dead skin and build-up, while some formulas use ingredients such as salicylic acid to support exfoliation. These products should be used as directed, especially if your scalp is sensitive or prone to irritation.

Need Help Choosing The Right Scalp Treatments?

Remember, skincare doesn’t stop at the face and body. Scalp care is just as important; everyone will tell you the same, from hairdressers to dermatologists. Choosing scalp care can feel confusing when dryness, oil, flakes, itchiness and sensitivity all need different support. At Stonehills Hair, we look at your scalp and hair together, not separately. What works for an oily scalp may not suit a dry scalp, and what helps product build-up may not be right for a sensitive scalp.

Whether you need a gentle shampoo, a balancing conditioner, a scalp serum, an exfoliating scalp treatment or advice on in-salon hair and scalp treatments, our team is here to help you choose with confidence.

Scalp Care FAQs

What is the best scalp care routine?

The best scalp care routine depends on whether your scalp is dry, oily, itchy, sensitive or affected by product build-up. Most routines start with a suitable shampoo, careful rinsing and the right conditioner placement. Some clients may also benefit from a scalp serum or occasional scalp treatment to help maintain a clean, balanced and comfortable scalp.

What causes an itchy scalp?

An itchy scalp can be caused by dryness, excess oil, product build-up, sensitivity, flakes or certain scalp conditions. In the salon, we often see itchiness when products are not rinsed out properly or when the scalp has been overloaded with heavy formulas. If the itch is severe, persistent, painful or linked with redness or thick scaling, it is best to seek medical advice.

Is scalp care important for healthy hair?

Yes. Scalp care is important because healthy hair grows from the scalp and hair follicles. A clean, balanced scalp helps the roots feel fresher and can support healthier-looking hair. If the scalp is oily, dry, flaky or irritated, the hair may feel dull, heavy, brittle or harder to manage.
